It's the Right Thing pairs saxophonist Pete Yellin with electric pianist Hal Galper for a shimmering set of laser-focused jazz-funk grooves. Yellin solos on both alto and flute, and his lighter-than-air tone is perfectly complemented by Galper's warm, rich support--for all the mainstream appeal of the production, however, darker undercurrents ripple below the surface of the melodies, enriching the scope and depth of the performance as a whole. Like so many Mainstream Records sessions from the mid-Seventies, much of the material originates from the charts, most notably a lovely cover of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," but It's the Right Thing never veers too close to pop for its own good--righteous stuff.
