“Originally commissioned by and performed at the Festival d’Ile de France, Le Silence de l’Exode (The Silence of the Exodus) is a new addition to the list of heterogeneous works regularly performed by the clarinettist Yom. Miles away from the fancy electronic-rock ventures of his Wonder Rabbis, the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt is rendered in acoustic music –a reinvented return to his roots for this committed creative who draws from both Ashkenazy roots and Sephardi sounds to reread the Klezmer tradition. He thus exalts the most mystical accents of the forty-year long wandering in the desert, accompanied by Farid D’s Oriental cello, Claude Tchamitchian’s double bass and Bijan Chemirani’s Iranian percussion (zarb, daf and bendir). Bringing to mind his fiery duet variations with Wang Li, the swift, repetitive whirlwinds of his clarinet are trance inducing. These very dense solos alternate with more restrained and meditative parts. It is the right balance to convey the fears, hopes and unfailing fervour experienced during the Exodus.”
