Rock Dust Light Star comes half a decade after Dynamite (2005). On this album we see how Jamiroquai tries to kick the funk machine again by harking back to their rock and organic soul background. In that sense, Rock Dust retains much of the blacklight disco power that made previous singles like "Little L" from A Funk Odyssey (2001), and "Feels Just Like it Should" from Dynamite (2005) such dancefloor hits. The album is nevertheless a growth record, with Kay showing more interest in complicated, drawn-out funk songs that take time to reach their inevitable, euphoric funk-pop peak. It is indeed reminiscent of the fuller band sound of Jamiroquai's earlier acid jazz albums.
