This is a varied advanced jazz set by trumpeter Malachi Thompson. Joined by tenor saxophonist Carter Jefferson, pianist Albert Dailey (in one of his final recordings) and a solid rhythm section, Thompson performs music that he accurately calls "Freebop." In addition to "I Remember Clifford," the strong band plays five originals that cover a lot of different moods; Leon Thomas ("No More Hard Times") and Arnae Burton take a vocal apiece that add to the set's variety. Worth exploring.
