It rarely happens now, we live in a world of distracted listening, but it happens sometimes to listen to records that from the very first notes strike you and make you realize immediately that the musician's work is really successful.
And then, time begins to stand still and you pause to think. And this is precisely the theme of Paolo Damiani's new CD, entitled "Al tempo che farà," recently released by Egea. A wish for change?
Definitely a wish for a new season of Italian jazz. And this is a very "Italian" record, for the refined melody, for the beauty of the words, for the artists playing, for our culture that gushes bloodily in every track.
Paolo Damiani, a superb composer, is the ideal glue for special people such as Trovesi, Girotto, Rea, Ferra, Walter Paoli and the surprise of Diana Torto's voice, which delights us already from the opening "Dirindena," a sweet lullaby that will also be reprised at the end as if to signify that when we wake up there will be a new time.
Voice and music blend sublimely, it almost seems as if this record was designed for unhurried listening, with an opening prayer, i.e. take time to "feel it," go in rhythm with your life.
And so even a challenging text such as one from Andrea Camilleri's "Il filo di fumo" is transformed into poetry. Sometimes it is also difficult to explain in words the beauty of a song, as is the case with "Sentieri smarriti" where all the instruments accompany us in search of something that has been lost, perhaps forever.
The interweaving of the woodwinds with the time marked by the touch of the piano and the arpeggios of the guitar, the jazz that blends with sounds that belong to us, but could also belong to other musical horizons.
This is precisely the skillful work of Damiani and his fellow travelers, having been able to renew sounds while digging into research from our tradition. A record that deserves listening and attention. Will you find the time?
