Marc Copland's second CD for Savoy is a terrific collaboration with guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer Billy Hart. With the pianist and the guitarist each contributing four strong originals apiece, the quartet is stimulated by this new music, giving their all. Highlights include Abercrombie's post-bop bossa nova "Happy Stance" and Copland's impressionistic "Snowfall," which suggests a gentle storm as dusk falls. Charlie Parker's "Au Privave" has been done to death in a typical bop setting, but their treatment incorporates Abercrombie's wild bent notes, a funky rhythm, and Copland's at times unusual chords. The extended workout of the standard "If I Should Lose You" adds a bit of tension and melancholy in a superb interpretation during its introduction, before the tempo picks up and the dark cast is listed. Highly recommended.
